Fans of the iconic show “I Love Lucy” are in for a special holiday treat this year.
On December 20 CBS will air the “I Love Lucy Christmas Show” episode of “I Love Lucy.” Not only will this be the first time in 23 years that the Christmas episode will air on the network, but it will also be shown in color.
The episode, which originally aired on December 24, 1956, was first re-broadcast in color on CBS in primetime on December 18, 1989, with the non-flashback portions shown in color a year later. Since, the special has never been re-broadcast in syndication.
While this will be the first time seeing the episode for many, the announcement (which came in in October) of plans to colorize the episode has been met with mixed reactions. Some people are excited to see the show; however, others believe that it should be left in its original black and white tint to keep it in its classic format.
“I Love Lucy” which ran from 1951 to 1957 starred Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance and William Frawley. The television sitcom was the most watched television show in the United States for four of its six seasons. After the show ended, it was followed with three season of “The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show”, a modified version of “I Love Lucy” featuring the same main cast.
The “I Love Lucy Christmas Show” will air on Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
