I-CON (short for "Island CONvention") is a yearly fan convention, originally held on the campus of the State University of New York at Stony Brook on Long Island, in Suffolk County, New York. This year's I-CON will take place from March 26 through March 28. I-CON is jointly held by ICON Science Fiction, Inc., a tax-exempt educational foundation, and the I-CON Campus Chapter of Stony Brook.
First held in 1982, I-CON has become a very eclectic convention. The programming includes everything from speeches by and talks with science fiction authors, extensive gaming, Anime fandom, furry fandom, multiple movie showings, medieval programming, and live performances.
I've attended I-CON for several decades as an attendee and more recently as a gaming panelist. This year I'll be covering I-CON as a journalist. Next year I hope to participate in gaming panels to promote my upcoming book, Paper & Pixels: The Evolution of Fantasy Gaming.
Gaming guests for this year's I-CON include SlugFest Games, Jess Hartley, IndIRPG, Chapter 13 Press, Dilly Green Bean Games, Aaron Rosenberg and Miskatonic River Press, who will receive the Robin D. Laws award for the best in gaming innovation. I'll be profiling each of the attendees throughout the month leading up to I-CON.
