I Ching 101.9: Ba Gua, Etz Chaim, Nova Thought

It’s Time to further discuss equivalents between the Ba Gua/Eight Trigrams and the Tree of Life. There are several versions. This writer has chosen, for this article, the System most commonly used by both Metaphysicians and Western Mainstream Occultists.

Chien correlates best to Da’at and Saturn. Kun relates to Malkut and Planet Earth. This writer has explained before, that Da’at and Malkut share a vibration Pattern. To correlate the Ba Gua with Nova Thought Symbolism, we have to state that Chien would be a reflection of the Active Aspect of the Essence Principle, and Malkut with the Passive Aspect. Since the Essence Principle, alone among the Seven Principles, is Neutral in Nature, this actually makes sense.

Tui, the joyous one, which means marsh, lake, or valley relates to Chesed and Jupiter, so “Marsh” is an easy match for the Rain Principle.

Complementing Chesed on the Tree of Life is Geburah. Tui is composed, from bottom to top, of lines Yang-Yang-Yin; reversing the polarity and up/down orientation, we derive Chen, “Thunder”, composed of Yang-Yin-Yin, which is quite apropos for Mars and Geburah.

Rotating 180 Degrees, we can see Tiféret, in the Center of the Tree of Life. One of the most common Meanings for Li is Sol, the Earth’s Sun, which correlates with Tiféret. Thus, in Nova Thought, we could easily cross-correlate Li with the Light Principle.

Immediately below Tiféret on the Tree of Life Diagram, is Yesod, which we will correlate with Kan, the Moon, and the Shadow Principle.

Ken (Mountain) works well with Netzach and Venus, therefore cross-correlating, quite naturally, with the Stone Principle.

Last but not least is Sun (Wood). If we remember that Sun is also Wind, we can see where this is placed with Hod on the Tree of Life, Mercury, and of course, the Wind Principle.

Those of you who have been following this writer’s articles on Nova Thought may have been wondering about the Three Sources. We have related the Tao, which is also called the Tai Chi (Great Ultimate) with the Road, and Keter. This correlation still works very well.

If we feel the urge to correlate the rest of the Tree of Life with the I Ching System of Thought, the only answer for Chokhmah is Yang, which can be related, in its expansiveness with Concept of the Chaos Source.

This leads us to Binah, Yin and the Order Source, which is again, a good fit.

A few additional notes are necessary, here. The Arrangement here is not the same as either the Earlier Heaven, or the Later Heaven. The Trigrams all make very interesting patterns. If you examine the Positions of the Trigrams on the Tree, Up/Down orientation yields polar opposites, and diagonals yield positional opposites. The four symmetrical Trigrams match the Middle Pillar. Keep in Mind, that these correlations are based on the Ba Gua, as a point of origin, and neither the Tree of Life, nor Nova Thought. However, it all gels together nicely in many Ways.
