This movie should have been titled I can make the same movie over and over again, all by myself. It wasn't a bad movie...I just felt as if I'd seen it already the last time Tyler Perry did a movie.
The plot is simple. A woman is beaten down by life, shutting everybody out, she has a religious experience, meets a man, initially hates him, and they fall in love and marry.
This has been essentially the theme of almost every movie that Perry has written. It also was disappointing that I was able to guess every scene before it happened.
*Spoiler alert* If you haven't seen the movie and don’t want to know what happens stop reading now.
I guessed immediately the mother was dead, I knew that the evil boyfriend was going to try and rape the teenager. I knew when Taraji’s character told her boyfriend to get in the tub she was going to try to electrocute him and I knew that Taraji and the handyman would fight and then profess their undying love and get married at the end.
I was also disappointed in that there was a lot of hype about Mary J Blige and Gladys Knight being in the movie only to find out they were nothing more than props. They had less than 10 lines between them and then they sang a lot. I felt this was a waste of two women who are not just great singers, but can also act.
Again, this movie wasn't bad per se. It was just the same story all over again.
I can do bad all by myself released on DVD and Blu-ray January 12, 2010.
