Next Wednesday September 21st, the I Am Music Festival hits DC. The festival will feature performances by some of the hottest and most known acts in the DC metro area as well as a panel style discussion surrounding how to make the most of your music career. Best of all, some of the proceeds from the I Am Music festival are being donated to the charitable MusiCares foundation.
Originally known as ‘Jam Session’, the IAM Fest was started in 2009 by native Washingtonian publicist Angela Byrd. Seeing the potential of the annual music fest, it was renamed ‘I Am Music’ as part of a rebranding effort. “This is for DC artists…who feel like music is their life and they are willing to do anything for it” says Byrd. The conference style festival will feature a panel that is slated to include Grammy winning production team, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Vibe magazine music editor John Kennedy, MTV’s DL Chandler, WPGC and DC’s own DJ Heat and more. The panel which will focus on timely topics such as how to get greater ‘buzz’, becoming blog-worthy and how to make sure that you are getting paid for your artistry will be moderated by WKYS’s Pharoh Martin.
Another highlight of this event will be the performances. Complete with a producers showcase, the purpose of the performances is not only for artists to have a chance to perform in front of some of music’s most influential professionals but also to receive feedback. Slated to perform at current are local superstars to include Tabi Bonney, Black Cobain, Rap Group Gods’illa, Uptown XO, Fatz the Big Fella and more. This promises to be not only fun, but informative as well. With a program and guests that know the DMV music scene better than anyone, I Am Music aims to further the reputation that the DMV and its artists are rightfully earning. In response to the reception thus far, Byrd says “It’s an incredible feeling that a lot of people are so open to what’s going on”.
The event, sponsored by FUZE beverages and Rocksmith Tokyo, will take place at U St. Music Hall, right in the heart of the district’s artistically legendary U. St. corridor. The event will start at 7:15 pm.
