I am convinced Abner Mares beats Nonito Donaire – De La Hoya

Golden Boy Promotions figure head, Oscar De La Hoya used twitter social network to describe his feelings about Nonito Donaire’s performance against Wilfred Vasquez Jr. “After watching Saturday’s fights, “said De La Hoya:” I am convinced Abner Mares beats Nonito Donaire, but I guess we will never see it as Bob Arum will find an excuse.” That was the only exciting match up left for Donaire at the bantamweight division when he decided to move up to super bantamweight. He did put on quite a show against talented former champion, Wilfred Vasquez Jr at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas this Saturday I brought De La Hoya’s opinion to Dave’s barbershop on San Fernando Road.

“I love Oscar,” exclaimed Dave the Barber:” Especially in those days when he was a young fighter, but he should leave match making to professionals. Nonito will run circles around Mares. They say speed kills and that is exactly what Nonito will do to Abner, kill him in the ring. I don’t even think Abner’s trainer wants that fight. Why do you think that Armenian kid, Vic Darchinyan never got a rematch? He was yelling and screaming and calling Nonito all kinds of names but his team knew better than to put him back in the ring with Donaire. This Filipino Flash is special. He would end Mares’s career.”

“I wouldn’t go that far,” cried out Downtown Ronnie Brown:” The kid is fast and skilled, but he got hit way too much for my taste by Vasquez Jr, the emphasis is on junior, not his father, a legendary champ, but junior who had no amateur experience. On the other hand Mares is Mexican Olympian and the boy doesn’t mind mixing it up and if Vasquez was able to hit him that often, Abner will do serious damage. To me it’s a toss up fight and a fight I would love to see. One thing Oscar is right about is that uncle Bob will not let that happen, otherwise he would have put Nonito in that bantamweight tournament.”

“Have you and Oscar been smoking the same shit lately?” inquired Al the Barber:” There is a very good reason why Nonito is on top of all of them pound for pound lists and why they call him Filipino Flash. That boy fires shots with a speed of lightening. Did you see that left hook that hurt Vasquez? No… Neither did Vasquez. That boy was stumbling around the ring like a lush coming out of the bar late at night. It’s the shot you don’t see that hurts you the most. And what about out that left uppercut left hook combination that dropped Vasquez? That was like Picasso painting. No matter how I look at this one, I just don’t see how Mares can compete with Donaire.”

“I don’t believe I am even saying this but I am going to have to side with Ronnie on this one,” announced Big Steve:” Nonito gets hit way too much and Abner Mares is a young fighter who’s got the whole package; he can fight and he can box and he can brawl. He showed his versatility in a rematch with Agbeko and he showed his guts in a fight with that Armenian kid. Mares has a great jab and if he pressures Nonito and traps him against the ropes he will do damage. He might even stop Nonito who looked vulnerable on Saturday. Nonito doesn’t like to get hit; he said so himself. And believe me he will get hit even more if he faces Abner.”
