An I-80 sinkhole has closed the Number one lane in both directions near Donner Pass Road in Truckee. The center medium is where the I-80 sinkhole opened up. Sinkholes seem to be more prevalent this year across the country, or is it just that they are making headline news more than ever before?
This I-80 sinkhole means major delays, according to Lake Tahoe News on Aug. 23. Motorists heading toward Sacramento, Bay areas and the Lake Tahoe-Reno region will see delays from this moderate size sinkhole that just opened up along the roadway.
The situation is being assessed right now so the contractors on the scene can get to work making the necessary repairs. Authorities were not able to give an estimated time for getting the emergency repairs completed so that the lanes that are closed today can reopen.
During a paving operation on Friday morning the I-80 sinkhole opened up. Right now it is estimated to be approximately 3 feet in diameter and more than 8-feet deep. Will it grow like the other sinkholes seen recently around the country? Why the sinkhole opened up is not known at this time, but they were doing construction in the area which did disturb the earth, so it may have stemmed from the work going on.
This sinkhole is minor in comparison to some of the sinkholes that have opened up around the country this year. Check out the recent sinkhole activity below.
