As reported by authorities, the crash happened on Interstate 40 in Tennessee to the west near mile marker 423. Authorities say that after a church bus that was traveling eastbound on I-40 tire blew out, it crossed the median striking a tractor trailer and also clipped a SUV that was traveling westbound.
The I-40 crash resulted in the tractor catching on fire and the bus was overturned in the process. As reported by emergency management officials in Jefferson County via NBC News, five medical helicopters arrived at the scene of the accident, on I-40 near Jefferson City.
Out of those killed in the I-40 crash, six were passengers on the bus, one in the tractor trailer, and one in the SUV. Officials also stated that 14 people were injured as well. Eight out of the 14 injured victims were taken to the hospital via helicopter.
TDOT is requesting that travelers heading toward North Carolina on eastbound I-40 to take Interstate 81 Northbound to Interstate 26 Eastbound and then back to I-40 Eastbound in North Carolina. Wreckage from the I-40 crash is expected to be cleared by 9:00 pm Wednesday.
