At least eight people are dead after an accident on I-40 as a North Carolina church bus crashed into an SUV and a tractor-trailer, according to USA Today on Oct. 2, 2013. The bus blew a tire and crushed the median in eastern Tennessee.
Fatalities in the I-40 crash include six of the passengers from the bus, the driver of the tractor-trailer, and one person that was in the Chevy Tahoe. The bus was traveling eastbound when it blew the tire and clipped the westbound Tahoe before slamming into the big rig, which then burst into flames.
I-40 ended up being closed in both directions after the crash occurred around 2:00 p.m. It was closed at mile marker 23 and the Department of Transportation has already advised that it would stay closed until at least 9:00 p.m.
The bus was carrying congregation members of the Front Street Baptist Church that is in Statesville, North Carolina. Most of those on the bus were senior citizens and returning from a fall jubilee gathering in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
After reports of the accident, a number of church members were said to be heading to the scene.
There has been no word as to the identities of those in the tractor trailer or the Tahoe.
