Hyundai Santa Fe and Sonata honored at Chicago Auto Show

Only a dedicated Los Angeles car fanatic would venture east to Chicago and its chilly weather to take in the Chicago Auto Show, which opened to the media on February 8 and will open to the general public on February 10. However, LA Hyundai owners—or those considering the purchase of one—might be interested in learning that on the first media day the Hyundai Santa Fe and Sonata were named recipients of the 2012 Total Cost of Ownership Awards from Kelley Blue Book. The 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe took first place in the Crossover segment and the 2012 Hyundai Sonata took top honors in the Mid-Size Car segment.

“The 2012 Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe outperformed their respective segments this year for total ownership costs,” noted Juan Flores, director of vehicle valuation for Kelley Blue Book. “The Sonata beat out the Kia Optima and Toyota Camry with its low insurance costs and savings in fuel and maintenance during the first five years, while the Santa Fe edged out competition in nearly every Total Cost of Ownership factor. Overall, both models are great buys among Hyundai’s impressive lineup.”

Kelley Blue Book’s annual Total Cost of Ownership Awards are given to vehicles and brands with the lowest projected total cost of ownership during the initial five-year ownership period. The awards are determined by calculating vehicle depreciation costs, cost of fuel during the ownership period along, and critical financial data from third- party providers.

The Santa Fe is Hyundai’s mid-sized crossover, between little brother Tucson and big brother Veracruz. It comes with an extensive array of standard features and is available with either a four-banger or V6 partnered with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The popular Hyundai Sonata is also a mid-sized vehicle; thus, it offers impressive interior space and excellent fuel economy with its four-cylinder engine. A turboed version is also available as well as a uniquely-styled hybrid version, which boasts 35 city and 40 highway MPG.  The 2012 model includes Blue Link, HD Radio Technology and a new seven-inch touch-screen navigation.
