Hythonia the Cruel is one of the newest "Theros" spoilers revealed today Sept. 9, 2013 from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert "Magic: The Gathering" expansion set in an article on GatheringMagic.com. You don't want to look at this legendary mythic rare creature in the eye: Hythonia the Cruel destroys all non-gorgons.
Hythonia the Cruel - 4BB
Legendary Creature - Gorgon (Mythic Rare)
6BB: Monstrosity 3. (If this creature isn't monstrous, put three +1/+1 counters on it and it becomes monstrous.)
When Hythonia the Cruel becomes monstrous, destroy all non-Gorgon creatures.
Although Hythonia the Cruel won't petrify your opponent's creatures like Xathrid Gorgon will, it can become a monstrous 7/9 creature and (against most players) destroy all of your adversary's creatures at once. A one-sided board wipe can be backbreaking, especially since Hythonia the Cruel will eat a good third of your rival's life total. You'll deal even more damage if you control other Gorgon creatures like Reaper of the Wilds on the battlefield.
As a legendary creature, Hythonia the Cruel can be very controlling Commander to play with regardless of how many other gorgons are in your deck. By the time you've acquired enough mana to pay Hythonia the Cruel's monstrosity cost you'll be able to recast her from the command zone should she die. In the right deck you'll be able to reset the board state multiple times a game, long enough to assemble a combo or just gain a massive amount of card advantage in comparison to your competitors and grind them out over the long haul.
While Hythonia the Cruel may not be the most impressive creature we've seen, your opponent certainly doesn't want to find themselves looking at her in limited.
How will you use Hythonia the Cruel?
