Recently a new study of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Cerebral Palsy is making an impact in India and the United States as well. This is the biggest case of children examined to evaluate neuro-development advancements centering on a blend of standard rehabilitation therapies like occupational, speech and HBOT. HBOT elevates the oxygen molecule capacity in the body into oxygen carrying blood cells and entire fluid bodies. This consists of a person going into a treatment chamber where the air pressure is condensed with additional molecules of air and oxygen. Recently, HBOT has collected great notice among media, with the athletes applying it for training and injury recovery, diabetics actually saving limbs, kills resistant bacteria in patients, and as of late, a new treatment for neurological brain injuries, traumas and disorders.

In actuality, this recent study which comes from India measures the use of numerous hyperbaric pressures by application of environmental air alone or oxygen enhancement used for the treatment of children with Cerebral Palsy(CP). This study demonstrates low pressure environmental air hyperbaric therapy as equal to or even more greatly efficient than high pressure oxygen at 100% for treating CP.

Dr. Arun Mukherjee, director of the UDAAN Disabled Children's Center, a non-profit organization, recognized and aided by the Indian Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, had observed these children.

The monumental study was co written with Dr. Pierre Marois of McGill University in Montreal Canada. This extends expansion of the 1999 innovated McGill study(Lancet, February 2001), by expansions in the amount of persons and executing a precise placebo controlled testing procedure. Persons who had a functional diagnoses of spastic diplegia cerebral palsy had one of four choices in addition to the standard therapy. They were as follows: placebo therapy (20 persons). Hyperbaric therapy at 1.3 environmental air under pressure (36 persons), hyperbaric therapy consisting of 100% oxygen 1.5 ATA(32 persons) and 100% oxygen at 1.75 ATA(58 persons). All participants receive a reevaluation at the six month marker upon ending of therapy to retract any traces from the placebo effect. The study demonstrated considerable improvements of all three groups that had gotten therapy. No considerable improvements were shown between different therapies however, a little improvement was observed in 1.3 ATA air only.

The findings when blended with the McGill study, discredit past beliefs within the hyperbaric industry to which 100% oxygen under high pressure is a exceptional treatment. A negative treatment belief is more precise. Pertaining to areas of cognitive development, the calmer therapy can not trigger narrowing of the blood vessels (vasconstriction) within the brain that other therapies can. This allows for extra oxygen to go through the tissues without restriction.

Dr. Mukherjee acknowledges this applies the focal point that the greater affordable hyperbaric therapy is an attainable treatment compared to the costly high pressure hyperbaric therapy and there is no compromise of the patients care.

This study has extensive indications for other neurological conditions also. Due to the immense up climbing costs of the treatment of traumatic brain injury for recovering veterans, stroke victims and autism, this study now brings about hope to the families who strive financially to obtain this greatly earned therapy.

Dr. Arun Mukherjee is Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine, Majeedia Hospital, and Hamdard University, New Delhi, India, and a member of the International Hyperbarics Association.

Cerebral Palsy conventional treatments include therapies such as occupational, speech and behavioral. Drug medications treatments for Cerebral Palsy and Spasticity include Valium, Botox and Dilantin.

Below are some alternative therapies which are not great in cost for children with Cerebral Palsy.

Hipotherapy

Commonly called Horse Therapy (animal assisted therapy). This therapy was established during the months of June and July in 2006. The children had gotten this therapy for two days a week for a six week period. Sessions ran for thirty minutes. Children age range was three to ten years old and had been helped by this type of therapy. This therapy is now suggested for children who have neuromotor and psychiatric disorders, muscular dysfunctions caused by bone marrow lesions and behavior disorders.

There has been numerous research done in animal assisted therapies for further reading on this research you can visit Anthrozoology.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic Vertebral Subluxation reduction done by qualified chiropractors had displayed better muscle tone and autonomic function (self performance) combined with better ability in daily activities.

Chiropractic care is the number one alternative therapy persons use today. Centers such as Henry Spink Foundation independent charity to help children with disabilities use chiropractic as a treatment with many other alternative therapies.

Biofeedback

This therapy was first put into use in the 1930's. Biofeedback therapy allows a person to be able to attain control of body functions by monitoring themselves or retraining their body. Sensors are put on the body which in turn watches the person. The sensors then gauge numerous attributes of the body such as temperature, muscle activity and brain waves. The impulses that change are noted and then relayed back to a computer monitor displayed through visual and/or auditory. Most of the time a chore is involved for the patient to do like moving object through a maze just by thought, the resemblance is to a pacman game. This is not done by patient moving such a device as joy stick but by changing their thoughts. Then the display and/or volume on the computer changes in progression with the body's activity. This then lets the patient make a connection of cause and effect which ultimately helps them to learn to change their behavior.

This therapy is very appealing to children because they are just being asked to play a computer game. This can have a level of difficulty with those children that have electrodes affixed to their heads for them to stay still.

Naturopathic

Naturopathic medicine treats conditions by using the body's own ability to heal itself. The therapy is totally safe and effective in many cases. Various alternative treatments are employed in its use. It is the second ranking alternative therapy that persons use today.
