Huston-Tillotson students can rent textbooks this fall

Huston-Tillotson University students will have a new way to save money on their textbooks, starting this fall 2010 semester. Students of the university, located in East Austin, will be able to rent textbooks, rather than buying them, at the university’s Follett bookstore through the Rent-A-Text service.

Rent-A-Text operates through bookstores across the country, enabling students to rent textbooks at a 50 percent or more savings compared with the price of buying new books. This can be an important savings since the cost of textbooks can be significant. A 2006 study found that the cost of textbooks per student in U.S. is approximately $1,000 per year on average.

Students can highlight and take notes in their rented books as long as the marks are not excessive and the book is still usable for future customers, and students have the option to purchase books if they decide to keep them. To use the service, students set up a rental account and can then rent their textbooks online or in-store. The Huston-Tillotson bookstore is located on campus at 900 Chicon St., Austin, TX, 78702.
