C.J. Wilcox has been the Washington Huskies' leading scorer since the season began. Never, though, has he put his team on his back like he did in Washington's 65-60 win at Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford University Saturday night. The victory gave Washington a perfect league record, and marks the first time in 100 years that the Huskies have started the league season 3-0, with all three wins coming on the road.
Wilcox, a 6'5" junior guard from Pleasant Grove, Utah went 10 /16 from the field, including 4/6 from beyond the arc, on the way to 27 points. Only Aziz N'Diaye, with 14 points, joined Wilcox in tallying double figures for the Dawgs. Desmond Simmons added 13 boards in leading the Huskies to a 10 rebound margin against the Cardinal.
Stanford led the game 26-25 at halftime as both teams suffered cold shooting from the field. Andy Brown and Josh Heustis had strong first halves on their way to eight points and eight rebounds respectively.
Inability to score from the field, a problem for the Cardinal all season, doomed them in the second half. The Huskies played some strong defense (notably Andrew Andrews with four steals) but Stanford had plenty of open looks. Shot after shot refused to find the mark, and Stanford fell to 1-3 in league play.
At 3-0 the Huskies find themselves just a half game behind league leading UCLA. The Huskies welcome the Rocky Mountain traveling contingent to Seattle next week. Colorado visits Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. P.S.T. Utah follows Saturday for an 8:00 p.m. tip.
