Want the latest on produce at the Durham Farmer's Market?
This Saturday, there were truckloads of beautiful green onions, green and red leaf lettuces, turnips, mixed greens, and watermelon radishes....
Huh? Yes that was not a typo. There were watermelon radishes grown by Hurgten Meadows Farm!
These unique beauties have a pale green skin, with a pink center and firm flesh.
They cook up nicely and are a beautiful topper for salads and side dishes!
What a way to spruce up your table this season!
A bit about the friendly folks at Hurtgen Meadows Farm:
Mr Thomas Hurtgen was reared on a Wisconsin dairy farm and has returned to his farming roots after 40 years of supporting his family. He is also an accomplished woodworker, producing beautiful carving boards! They started the farm in 2001 producing quality horse hay; added vegetable crops in 2008, and cut flowers in 2009.
They use organic matter fertilizer and other sustainable practices such as composting and cover cropping.
Cover crops generally keep pests and disease at bay, help to surpress weed growth and nourish the soil.
Here is a listing of what they have at market this week:
Kohlrabi Arugula Lettuces
Turnips Beets Radishes
Onions Spinach Chard
Collards Peppers (Red and Green)
Eggplant Okra Green Beans
Sweet Potatoes
Cilantro Rosemary Sage
