Hurt feelings over name of Spanish Disco; Muslims outraged

For the past several years, Al-Qaeda has been eyeing the country of Spain, particularly southern Spain, for opportunities to re-establish muslim government in the area.  It was this group of Islamist terrors who blew up four commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people and injuring 1,500-1,800 others.  This was done out of honor and respect for the wishes of Osama Bin Laden.  With him, they desire to revive Al-Andalus back to where it was in the Middle Ages as Spain's Muslim kingdom.

The latest Muslim victory has involved no deaths, only threats.  The target was a nightclub called La Meca.  Designed and decorated much like a mosque, La Meca, in the 1980's-90's, was the hotspot for jet-setters and VIP tourists in the city of Aguila, southeastern Spain, before it closed down a decade ago.

It re-opened this past June with the same name, La Meca (Spanish for Mecca), and problems in the Muslim world with regard to the name suddenly began to surface.

It started with a single incident.  The new owners, with high expectations, offered a security guard the opportunity to be head bouncer at their new club; but the guard declined the offer.  It turns out he was a devout Muslim, and that the club's name was in violation of his beliefs.

News of this honorable Muslim's refusal to go against his religion circulated throughout the internet, and it wasn't long before Islamic groups began calling for the club to change its name.  Some groups were inflamed by the insult to Islam and even called for jihad.

Arabic news channel Al Arabiya said associating Mecca with a disco 'insulted Spanish Muslims' (about 1.5 million people or roughly 3% of the Spanish population), and Radio Islam of Iran also described the name as 'insulting.'

A boycott of Spanish goods was threatened.  A lawsuit by the Islamic Federation of the Region of Murcia was being planned against the owners for prejudice and for insulting the honour of their religion.

Facebook pages such as 'Everyone against the nightclub called Mecca in Spain' were set up.  One fan wrote, 'They have declared war on Islam.'

La Meca’s website was pirated by a hacker who said the name 'attacked the hearts of Muslims worldwide.' 'Would you like your church to be turned into an animal farm or rubbish deposit?" He also warned of a “great war between Spain and the people of Islam” if they refused to change their name. (Some Muslims said anything outside the law was wrong, and they denounced the hacking.)

Last week, the owners of the disco were alerted to new threats being made online against associating the decadent western party paradise with their holiest city of Mecca.  According to the National Intelligence Centre of Spain, muslims--extremists and moderates--were calling for the name to be changed because:
'Muslims pray towards Mecca and it is there that the prophet received the holy Koran......'
'Calling a place for dancing and drinking by that name shows disregard to the feelings of Muslims.'...Mohamed Ali, Spanish Federation of Islamic Religious Entities
Antonio García Petite, founder of the Committee of Muslim Arbitration and Good Deeds, said that 'Mecca' is acceptable in commercial use for something like 'the Mecca of cinema' or 'the Mecca of jazz,' and will not cause offense; but, he said, it is inappropriate to associate a discotheque with that name.

The owners agreed to meet with Muslim leaders and then decided it was best to change their name to 'La Isla' (the Island).  All Muslim decorations would be removed or changed.

And so it goes.  Their disco has undergone a whole new identity, and now Muslims in the area are at peace with nightclubs once again.

"Don't believe all the negative stereotypes in the media. Islam is a big religion, and some of its members are more fundamentalist, like Christianity and Judaism. But the vast majority of Muslims are more "mainstream" and know that killing other people is horrible. Don't believe hurtful stereotypes. But if you really want to know what Islam is teaching of hate and killing such as:
-O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.
-O you who believe! Fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).
