Mardi Gras is that time of year where people shed their winter wings and usher in a pre-spring awakening with beads, booze, and more than a little bit of debauchery. San Diegans rarely need an excuse to celebrate, but come March 4th, they will flock to downtown for the Fat Tuesday festivities.

Planning to miss the parade and massive 5th Avenue partying this year? Not sure you want to sneak a sighting of Snoop Dogg a.k.a Snoop Lion a.k.a Snoop-a-licious? You can still enjoy some New Orleans-inspired tradition at a couple of San Diego establishments who are getting into the spirit of southern hospitality.

Head over to The Commons Bar, still downtown, but away from the chaos of the Mardi Gras core and sip on $6 Hurricane (a NOLA staple) and Tropical Storms drink specials. Craving comfort food? They’ll be dishing up two Fat Tuesday specials. The Boeuf Gras Mac & Cheese made with smoked gouda, andouille sausage, and blackened chicken will make you feel indulgent, while the Buffalo Shrimp Po’ Boy will whet your Mardi Gras appetite.

If you’re hoping to avoid the downtown crowd altogether, Herringbone La Jolla serves a spicy Shrimp n’ White Grits to satisfy your creole craving. Chef Malarkey’s special version includes bacon lardon and oyster mushrooms for a fun twist on a Cajun classic.

Where will you be getting your Fat Tuesday fix?
