Hurricane watch in effect for Woods Hole, Sagamore Beach Cape Cod and islands

Hurricane Earl is heading up the east Coast and hurricane warnings and watches are posted from the southeastern to northeastern U.S. The National Hurricane Service posted a Hurricane Watch for Massachusetts' Cape Cod area at 11PM Wednesday night. The watch covers Woods Hole to Sagamore Beach along with Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Meanwhile, a more severe Hurricane Warning is in effect from Bogue Inlet North Carolina northeastward to the North Carolina and Virginia border.

What are Hurricane Watches Warnings and what do they mean for you?

A Hurricane Warning is the more serious of the two and means that “hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area." Such a warning is usually issued 36 hours before the first tropical storm forced winds are expected. This includes “conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous" and preparation should be expedited "to protect life and property as soon as possible." In other words, batten down the hatches and head for safety, pronto.

A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the “watch area” according to the National Hurricane Service. Usually, a hurricane watch is sent out 48 hours prior to the “anticipated first occurrence of tropical storm force winds.” This means that if you live in a hurricane watch area, you should be ready for whatever comes and take precautions.Hurricane are unpredictable and can change course quickly so if you live in w watch area, take the proper precautions.

Additionally, a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from Sandy Hook, New Jersey to Woods Hole, MA, This includes Block Island, Long Island Sound and North of Sagamore Beach to the mouth of Merrimack River in MA. Counties included in the warning are: Eastern Essex; Suffolk; Eastern Norfolk; Eastern Plymouth, Souter Bristol, Southern Plymouth, MA

According to the National Hurricane Service, a Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the area, usually within 48 hours. The hurricane service is advising people in Northern New England and Southeastern Canada to monitor the progress of Hurricane Earl. Bottom line, Hurricane Earl is a powerful storm and is on its way up the East Coast, Be prepared and take the watches and warnings seriously.
