Hurricane season trends after August 30th

The peak of hurricane season (September 10th) is quickly approaching and only 4 named storms have occurred, with only one tropical system (Tropical Storm Claudette) making landfall in the United States. (no significant damage)

This is great news, but as we approach the peak of hurricane season and throughout the month of September, tropical activity does increase.

There have been 3 other years since 2000, with 4 named storms through August 30th. (2000, 2001, and 2002)

(Note: No years with less than 4 named storms through August 30th, since 2000)

During the 2000 Atlantic Hurricane Season, four named storms occurred through August 30th. (2 hurricanes and 2 tropical storms)

Thereafter, 10 named storms occurred through the remainder of the season, seven of which occurred during the month of September, with the remaining 3 occurring in October. (6 hurricanes and 4 tropical storms)

During the 2001  Atlantic Hurricane Season, 4 named storms occurred through August 30th. (4 tropical storms)
Thereafter, 11 named storms occurred through the remainder of the season, 4 of which occurred during the month of September, with 5 occurring in October and 2 in November. (9 hurricanes and 2 tropical storms)

During the 2002 Atlantic Hurricane Season, 4 named storms occurred through August 30th. (4 tropical storms)
Thereafter, 8 named storms occurred through the remainder of the season, with all 8 storms occurring in the month of September. (4 hurricanes and 4 tropical storms)

This is not an exact indication on how this hurricane season will turn out, but the trends since 2000 (excluding 2005) have been for an average of 8 more named storms after August 30th.
