Hurricane Rick category became a category 5 hurricane this evening with winds of over 160 mph, up from a category 4 hurricane this morning with winds up to 135 mph. It is off the southwest coast of Acapulco, Mexico.
The National Hurricane Center website states: “extremely dangerous hurricane Rick continuing to strengthen.” It grew from a category 1 to a category 5 storm in only 42 hours.
Acapulco residents were warned that the hurricane may trigger landslides and flooding. If Hurricane Rick stays on its current path with a gradual northern turn it may hit landfall in Baja California Wednesday or Thursday.
In Utah, there are several agencies that help citizens prepare for disasters by creating mock disasters, in case of an emergency. There are some disasters that are not anticipated, such as the tornado that touched down in Salt Lake City near the capital 10 years ago.
