On this date, four years ago today, (August 23, 2005) a large area of thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave and remnants of tropical depression 10 organized into a broad area of low pressure.
The National Hurricane Center would declare this area Tropical Depression Twelve on the evening of the 23rd of August, with winds near 35 mph.
Tropical Depression 12 formed an estimated 175 miles southeast of Nassau, and was moving northwest near 8 mph.
Tropical Storm Warnings were issued for the Central and Northwestern Bahamas.
The National Hurricane Center discusses the possibility of this depression becoming a hurricane and alerts Southern Florida, that a Tropical Storm or Hurricane Watch might be needed later that evening.
National Hurricane Center Discussion:
IF CENTRAL CONVECTION DEVELOPS WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS...THEN THIS SYSTEM COULD REACH HURRICANE STRENGTH BEFORE IT MAKES LANDFALL.
By 11 PM EDT, The National Hurricane Center warns that the depression is gradually organizing, with this system possibly becoming a tropical storm, within 24 hours.
A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for portions of the East Coast of Florida and the Florida Keys.
National Hurricane Center Discussion:
SINCE TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS COULD BE VERY CLOSE TO THE SOUTHEAST COAST OF FLORIDA AND THE NORTHERN FLORIDA KEYS IN ABOUT 36 HOURS... A TROPICAL STORM WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED AT THIS TIME. A TROPICAL STORM WARNING AND PERHAPS A HURRICANE WATCH COULD BE ISSUED ON WEDNESDAY IF THE DEPRESSION STRENGTHENS MORE RAPIDLY THAN CURRENTLY FORECAST.
This would be the beginning and or the birth of Hurricane Katrina.
(Further updates expected over the next few days as we mark the 4 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst hurricanes to strike the state and the country.)
