The fifth major hurricane of the year could be the most deadly and destructive. Hurricane Karl exploded with development overnight and had winds up to 120 mph this morning, according to the National Hurricane Center. The vivid eye seen on the satellite video loop is wrapped around a dense band of clouds and rain, which could lead to further development before making landfall on Mexico tonight. As of 5 am, Karl was located about 70 miles to the northeast of Veracruz. The current path to the west brings landfall by tonight with winds up to 140 mph. That would bring a deadly mix of storm surge between 12-15 feet, high waves, and flooding rain near Veracruz and Tuzpan. The track into the high mountains of central Mexico also includes the densely populated Mexico City. Rainfall could rainge from 5-15 inches and produce extensive flooding and mudslides.
This has been a very active season so far. This week a record was set with two Category 4 storms at the same time (Igor and Julia). Yesterday became the first time in 12 years that three hurricanes were active in the Atlantic at the same time.
