Hurricane Irene is already impacting the transportation network of the United States as she prepares to make landfall this weekend along the East Coast.
US Passenger railroad AMTRAK has already canceled trains this weekend south of Washington D.C. and the major US Railroads in the region (NS and CSX) both are preparing for direct hits to their infrastructure.
Flooding in the New York area as predicted by some forecasters could cause major damage to the rail system which enters the area through tunnels as well as the commuter railroads and subway systems.
A direct hit could also cause major flooding and damage to the roads of the region particuarly on the barrier islands of North Carolina and low-lying coastal areas along the Eastern Seaboard.
Major airlines in the region have already made plans for flight cancelations and are waiving change fees to allow passengers impacted by the storm to make arrangements to flee ahead of landfall. Airline hubs from Washington DC north to Boston including the New York area will be impacted by this massive storm.
The Transportation Headlines Examiner and Railroad Examiner will be bringing you constant updates as the impact of Irene to the transportation infrastructure continues to be felt this weekend.
