Hurricane Irene's east coast cruise delays, halts MKE eastbound flights

With major east coast airline hubs closed or closing as hurricane Irene approaches, General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is urging passengers booked on eastbound flights to check the status of their reservations and take advantage of rescheduling fee-waive deals.

The five New York-area hub airports are set to close at noon on Saturday, the Associated Press reported.

In Milwaukee, WTMJ reported Irene's on-schedule arrival for her tour of the scenic U.S. east coast is forcing travelers heading east from Mitchell Airport to shift their plans, as flight delays and cancellations begin.

At 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, the Milwaukee airport's Twitter account and Facebook page were not reporting cancellation and delay details, but urged airline customers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport, and reminded travelers that many of the companies are waiving change-fees for flights affected by the storm.
