Hurricane Irene contributes to Connecticut's cat homelessness crisis

The anticipated increase of homeless cats in New England animal shelters is a harbinger of summer’s end. The season’s evident waning, combined with the impact upon Hurricane Irene on the state of Connecticut, has resulted in an overwhelming influx of cats at the Connecticut Humane Society shelters in Newington, Westport, and Waterford.

This past weekend the Connecticut Humane Society held a Hurricane HELP Cat Adoption event to jumpstart the adoption processes for all of these felines that desperately need loving homes.

The addresses and contact information for all three branches of the Connecticut Humane Society are listed below:

Additionally, the Connecticut Humane Society regulates a cat adoption center at the PetSmart at 351 North Frontage Road in New London. To contact the center, call (860) 440-3321.

Adoption hours for cats are Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Sunday adoption hours for both cats and dogs are 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Prospective pet parents are encouraged to bring all members of the family when visiting the shelters.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, it is easy to assess the physical, structural damage; however, it takes truly dedicated animal lovers to notice, save, and protect the infamous storm’s forgotten felines.
