Hurricane Earl is now a category 3 storm and well on it's way to growing stronger. It is in a favorable environment with light upper level winds and warm sea surface temperatures. The developing eye looks large as the upper level clouds clear out on the video loop below. This storm has hurricane force winds extending 60 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds out 185 miles.
The center of the storm is located 120 miles away from San Juan Puerot Rico, and the eye can be seen on the radar loop here. The outer rain bands have been lashing the islands and rain could range from 4 to 12 inches, enhanced by the mountains.

The forecast path extends just of of the US east coast, but there is a 200-300 mile margin of error. This places the potential for a North Carolina or New England landfall, but dangerous rip currents will also be guaranteed along the entire shoreline. Just this past weekend, Danielle produced rip currents that forced Ocean City, MD beaches to close. Nearly 300 water rescues were made, and one swimmer has not been found. More on that and the wave forecast from the Baltimore Weather Examiner page.
