Category 4 strength Hurricane Earl passed within 100 miles of San Juan Puerto Rico, allowing the eye itself to be seen on the radar loop from Monday evening.  The winds were 135 mph, making this in the top 15% of all storms, but the hurricane force winds extended out only 70 miles from the center.  However the tropical storm force winds did reach 200 miles from the center.  This brought waves of 18 to 25 feet on the north shore of the island and Virgin Islands.

This storm is expected to strengthen a little before loosing some steam and passing very close to the US coast near North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland.  See the latest images and wave forecasts from The Baltimore Weather Examiner.
