Hurricane Arthur prompts Tropical Storm Warning for Ocean City MD

For starters: Severe storms are possible in central Maryland (into PA and VA) today but that is from a cold front and NOT related to Arthur. Interests along the southern Chesapeake Bay, Ocean City, MD and southward will be the edge if the impact from the hurricane off the eastern seaboard.

At 5 am this morning Arthur became the first hurricane (see full storm report here) of 2014 with winds of 75 mph. The size of the storm is important to Ocean City, MD and the rest of the Mid Atlantic. Since the storm is expected to make landfall after midnight near Morehead, NC, then over Cape Hatteras or OBX before curving out to sea. This should keep the center SOUTH of Virginia Beach.

Hurricane Force (75+ mph) Winds extend 25 miles from the center.

Tropical Storm Force (40+ mph) Winds extend 75 miles from the center.

On the northern edge:

Tropical Storm Warning for Ocean City and the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay (until further notice), but this will be on the northern edge of the storm. Outer rain bands will clip this area, but it will also be under the influence of a cold front approaching from the west. That is the storm that will push Arthur out to the east off of the coast.

The worst conditions will arrive overnight tonight and into Friday morning. Winds will exceed 40 mph and there could be an isolated tornado in some rain bands. But as the maps show, the closest pass will be early Friday afternoon, however by that point dry air will already try to be moving in.

Wave heights are likely to range between 6-10 feet, but dangerous rip currents will remain into part of the weekend. So only the brave surfers may be the few venturing into the water for a few days until the water settles down.

The weather will dramatically improve Friday evening and should be OK for Fireworks displays along the entire coast.

*UPDATE* Ocean City MD has postponed their fireworks displays until Saturday due to Arthur. This will disappoint many when the weather on Friday evening looks much better and those who were planning on leaving Saturday. Better safe then sorry I presume.
