The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library kicks off a series of dystopian science fiction films with a free screening of "On the Beach" (1959) on Monday, January 28, 2013, at 6 p.m. The film will be shown in the second floor events room at the main branch location.
Directed by Stanley Kramer, this two-time Oscar nominee stars Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, and Anthony Perkins in a story about global nuclear war. Peck plays an American submarine captain who finds a final, but temporary, refuge from the deadly fallout in Australia, where the other characters approach the end of human life on earth in differing ways.
The film is the first in a series called "Future Imperfect," which will run on selected Mondays from January 28 through March 11. Other movies in the series include "Fahrenheit 451" (1966) on February 4 and "Soylent Green" (1973) on February 11.
