Huntington man accused of stealing from church box

A Huntington man was arrested Wednesday and charged in connection with the theft of money from a church donation box, Suffolk County police said.

George Kanganis, 47, of 320 Nassau Road, was arrested at 10:36 a.m. on Wednesday by Second Precinct patrol officers. Police said an employee at the Church of St. Patrick, located at 400 West Main St., saw a man taking cash from a candle donation box. The employee then called 911 to report the theft and police responded to the scene. The amount of money taken from the church was not immediately known.

Police located Kanganis on West Main Street in Huntington, a short time after the theft, authorities said in a news release. He was charged with petit larceny and possession of burglar tools.

Kanganis was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday. As of press time, details from the arraignment were not available. Correctional records show Kanganis as currently being held in the Suffolk County Jail.
