Huntington Beach Lice Expert: The Truth About Home Remedies!

So I have a lice removal salon in Huntington Beach called Bernadette's at the Beach. Yesterday, I had a family who was visiting from Arizona come in. The mom, dad, and four kids, ages 11-16. The two girls had this 'gunk' on their heads. I asked what it was...they said "our pediatrician said to put VASOLINE on our heads to kill lice". I have also had people come in with mayonnaise on their heads. OK, so the truth is...you CAN suffocate an adult louse or nymph (a hatched, but immature louse - important because it can't lay eggs yet). You can smear any thick substance...vasoline, mayo, even peanut butter. You put a shower cap on for a few hours. It DOES kill lice. The problem is...it doesn't KILL NITS (eggs). If you put the home remedy on your head every 2 or 3 days...for a few hours...eventually you would get rid of the lice, because there would be no more adult lice to lay new eggs. But who wants to go to school smelling like mayo or peanut butter. The other problem is getting it OUT! The problem with home remedies is they typically don't advocate combing out NITS with a good nit comb. You have to eliminate nits, and the most effective way is to thoroughly comb them out. (The other option is the LouseBuster, which uses warm, controlled air to dehydrate the lice and nits. It actually dehydrates the amniotic fluid around the nits!). So, save the peanut butter and mayo for lunch, put the vasoline back in the first aid closet. Just buy a good non-toxic enzyme treatment, and a Terminator Nit Comb. That's the ticket!
