There is an old abandoned hospital near Springfield Lake that is rumored to be haunted. Strange things have been witnessed in the former tuberculosis hospital and on its grounds. Staff and patients have encountered ghosts and other odd phenomena.
History
The Springfield Lake Sanitarium was built in 1910 and later opened in 1915. It was used as a tuberculosis hospital until 1960. The hospital was renamed Edwin Shaw in 1934 and started accepting all patients in 1960. It eventually became an inpatient rehabilitation center.
The Sunshine Cottage annex opened in 1922, for the treatment of pediatric tuberculosis. In 1960, thirteen new cottages were built for abused and orphaned children. Each cottage housed twelve kids with a total population of 156. The cottages were named; Craig, Hanford, Harper, Herman, Kibler, Kramer, Krause, Marvel, McIntosh, Upson, Voke, Witwer, and Wood. They were named in honor of the hospital's contributors. The village was later renamed Hart Hall for John Hart, a Child Welfare Board Trustee.
The former Edwin Shaw Hospital now sits abandoned. The hospital staff moved to a new location in Cuyahoga Falls in 2010.
