Hunting the haunted: Springfield Township's Briar Hill Cemetery

The Briar Hill Cemetery has had many ghost sightings over the years. The cemetery sits abandoned next to the Springfield Lake Sanitarium. Odd things have been encountered in the former tuberculosis hospital and on its grounds. Local residents and former staff believe the cemetery is haunted.

History
The Springfield Lake Sanitarium was built in 1910 and later opened in 1915. It was used as a tuberculosis hospital until 1960. Many patients that died from the deadly disease were buried at the Springfield Lake Cemetery on Briar Hill. The cemetery is located on the property and contains 246 graves. Burials took place from 1915 to 1922.

The Briar Hill Cemetery has been known as the Springfield Lake Sanitarium Cemetery and the Edwin Shaw Cemetery.

The former Edwin Shaw Hospital and its cemetery was abandoned in 2010 when Edwin Shaw moved to a new facility in Cuyahoga Falls.

Haunted History
Staff and patients have encontered odd things at the hospital and in the cemetery. Most nearby residents believe the property is haunted and many of them have seen its ghosts. Some of the locals claim that they have heard and witnessed the spirits of children. Strange floating lights are common near the graveyard.

Location
The Springfield Lake Sanitarium Cemetery on Briar Hill, is located at 1621 Flickinger Road, in Akron, Ohio.
