On Saturday evening, Columbia County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of an overdue hunter, when family reported that the man had not returned at the appointed time. On the morning of Oct. 13, deputies reported that the man, Kirt Stone, 55, of Beaverton, was found safely.
It took about six hours to locate Stone, who was in the woods off of the Columbia mainline in the Vernonia area. The search party included two Columbia County Sheriff's deputies, the Vernonia Police Department, dispatchers with Columbia 9-1-1 and members of the missing man's family. Stone was located around 3 a.m. on Oct. 13.
When searchers found the man, he was uninjured and dressed for cold weather. He told police that he did not have a working flashlight and became disoriented. Eighteen Columbia County Search and Rescue volunteers and a National Guard helicopter were preparing to join the search at the time.
