York, Maine - A case of mistaken identity and a quick finger on a trigger led to the untimely demise of a family pet shortly after Christmas.
On December 27, Sophie, a mixed breed dog, was enjoying an outing with her family on a trail behind their Hooper Shores Road home.
The 5 yr-old dog ran ahead of her owners, Matthew and Heather Henriksen, when a hunter, mistaking her for a coyote, fired a shot.
Tragically, the bullet severed an artery in Sophie's leg and she bled to death before she could receive help from a veterinarian.
Now, the hunter, Gregory Brown, 39, is facing charges in conjuction with Sophie's death.
According to Seacoastonline.com, Brown is charged with shooting a domesticated animal, a Class E offense.
If convicted, Brown could lose his hunting license and face fines.
To his credit, Brown did not leave the scene and was, in fact, the person to first contact the police. According to the news source, Brown also tried to help Sophie after she was shot.
Rest in Peace Sophie.
