The Genealogical Society of Yuma will host the 11th Annual “Dining with the Dead” at the Yuma Cemetery on Saturday, January 26, 2013 from 4:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Cost of the event is only $25 and includes a dinner served BBQ style and a historic tour of the cemetery.
The dinner will be furnished by a caterer and served by members of the Genealogical Society. The food is a traditional western fare of local BBQ Beef, Cole Slaw, Beans and a Roll. There will be several tables and seating available for dining guests. The lines for the food are usually short. Waiting time for the tour is about one hour which gives you time to savor your delicious meal.
Dining with the Dead is an opportunity to have a barbecue dinner in the historic cemetery and visit selected grave sites of pioneers who have made an impact on Yuma in years gone by. There will be a re-enactor at each of several grave sites who ‘transforms’ into one of the pioneers of Yuma’s past. It is a great way to enjoy dinner and learn more about Arizona history at the same time.
The proceeds will benefit the genealogical society's ongoing efforts to transcribe historical documents in Yuma County into a digital format, which will make the information accessible in a computer archive.
The tours will be offered continually from 4:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 6 p.m. You can eat before you go on the tour, or you can go on the tour and then have your meal.
Tickets for the event are available by calling the Yuma Genealogical Society at 928-446-2892. Tickets should be purchased in advance.
Arizona weather can be unpredictable this time of year, but usually it is warm. Expect temperatures of about 75 degrees, cooling down at night fall. The walkways are gravel and not level, so good walking shoes are a must. Event organizers suggest attendees to bring a flashlight, jacket, and hat.
