Humility paying huge dividends for gospel singer Anita Wilson

The bible speaks of humility time and time again. Jesus is the ultimate example of humility and believers are to be proof that humility works(1 Pet. 5:6). Gospel singer Anita Wilson is a perfect example of the power of humility. Wilson’s humble nature has kept her grounded during her meteoric rise to the top of the gospel charts. During a recent interview, Wilson shared a little about her career and her future, true by products of genuine humility! She is not only a blessing musically, she is a blessing to the Kingdom at large.

You’ve heard it said before, “humble is the way” but for singer Anita Wilson, it’s a way of life! The singer’s meek manor and unbelievably gracious demeanor have landed her atop the charts. Of course, she can really sing! Wilson still thanks fans on facebook and twitter when they share stories about her breakout hit “Jesus Will”.

She thanks them for whatever connection her music creates for them. Without a doubt, her music connects each listener to the Lord. Wilson’s music has for many opened the door of worship that had long been inaccessible. As a worship leader, her goal is to make worship easy for those listening/in services, not draw/create attention to/for herself.

Listeners find themselves enthralled in the purest form of worship with songs like “Speechless”, “More of You” and “Perfect Love Song” just to name a few. Her debut album is not without variety. “Jesus Will” is perhaps the most popular track on the album but “Keep on Praising” and “He Shows Out” are also perfect for any listening situation.

Together with her genius co-writer and musical director Rick Robinson, Wilson has launched a new style of worship music: A style that feels good and is as genuine as the psalms of David. Wilson’s project even features a cover of the James Taylor classic: “Shower the People”. Wilson’s simple and refined style transforms the song from a cover to a new experience.

Wilson knows that success in this industry is fleeting but also that the promises of God are sure and steadfast. The East St. Louis native has worked with stellar artists from all across the country. She’s done some of her best work close to home- Donald Lawrence and Pastor Charles Jenkins most notably come to mind. If you have seen the video for “Awesome” (Fellowship Chicago), you may or may not have noticed Wilson directing the choir (two of Wilson’s songs are also featured on the project).

Wilson served in the capacity of vocal director faithfully at the Fellowship Church until only recently when her travel schedule filled up following the release of “Worship Soul”.
The Pastor’s daughter is an admitted “Daddy’s girl” and regularly posts pictures of her and her beloved father. He sings with her on “He Shows Out” and the father/ daughter dynamic shines through the recording. She keeps a very strong connection to her family and travels home to visit her father regularly.

Wilson continues to travel throughout the country singing Jesus Will, Speechless and other songs from her phenomenal debut album. A new album is in the works and will feature more of what makes “Worship Soul” so special. Look for collaborations as well as a cover or two.

In an era where big, bold, brash and loud rule the airwaves and boardrooms, Wilson remains strongly confident, yet meek and gentle. Not afraid that what she’s been given isn’t enough, she continues to revolutionize music for singers and musicians all over the country. Her success on and off the stage is a testimony that for many humility is actualized in the form of actually showcasing what God has given, not hiding it!

In the music column this week, take a look at how Wilson’s independent project became a national release and drafted a new blueprint for aspiring artists!
