Humane Society University is the District's newest degree-granting postsecondary institution

Canines all over town will want to sit up and take notice of reports coming out of the District’s newest degree-granting postsecondary institution. Beginning this fall, the Humane Society University (HSU) will offer undergraduate degrees and graduate certificates in Animal Studies, Animal Policy and Advocacy, and Humane Leadership. An affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States, HSU is licensed as a higher education degree-granting institution by the District of Columbia Education Licensure Commission and is applying for accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The HSUS is the first animal welfare organization in the nation to receive such authority and distinction.

Targeted to working adults and those wanting to complete bachelors’ degrees, HSU programs are designed to educate students to qualify them for employment with one of the more than 17,000 nonprofit organizations that protect, provide services to, or advocate for animals. For admission to the undergraduate program, students must have already earned junior status or completed at least 60 college credits including general education requirements at another accredited institution. Both online and classroom based courses are offered to students admitted to any one of the three undergraduate majors. In addition, library services are available through a partnership with American University and the Washington Research Library Consortium which includes Catholic University, Gallaudet University, George Mason University, George Washington, Georgetown, Marymount University, and the University of the District of Columbia.

Obviously, the University hopes to attract students interested in animals and animal advocacy. All degree programs are interdisciplinary and each major has a set of core course requirements, capstone and electives in the field of human-animal studies. “The programs are designed for students who seek to advance work on behalf of animals by gaining advanced skills and knowledge,” announced Robert Roop, Ph.D., president of Humane Society University. He adds, “The interdisciplinary curriculum is unmatched by any other licensed scholastic body in the world.” Applications are currently being accepted and registration is ongoing for classes starting October 24th.

    This is great!

This is what happens when you let a cult philosophy take over your country. They can set up sham universities that continue to push this philosophy that all domestic animals should never be owned and allowed to die off. The goals of this university are to educate the animal rights radicals into the ways of using government processes to pass laws that will end the use of all animals. It is not about animal welfare it is about denying your right to own a pet or eat meat. This is a cult university and as such is not about critical thinking but about a cult philosophy that denies the biology of human beings as omnivores and the biological advantage domestic animals have in creating a symbiotic relationship with humanes for the species. This is a cult no different than Jim Jones or the Reverend Moon. The only difference is that they have taken money from people pretending to care about homeless animals when in fact the laws they pass have caused the kill rates to soar. Investigate them.

You are right on, Dr. Rosset!!

  • Joe 2 years ago

Dr. Rosset has the info right, the HSUS is full of people who truly do NOT KNOW ANIMALS, some of the people that taut them as EXPERTS are sheep that are, most likely well meaning, but do more damage than good and when you don't know what you are doing, its a tragedy!

This "course" is nothing but a danger to society, those people are involved with terrorists and are a cult, just as Dr. Rosset said.

Now, where does the EXAMINER get so many Animal Rights people with columns, is that a prerequisite?

  • Jato 2 years ago

Great comments and observations Dr. Rossett! You are spot on.

HSUS is NOT an animal welfare organization. They advocate that an animal has more rights than human beings. They are about the destruction of social order and the destruction of animals, most especially those animals which are domesticated.

The HSUS is a mainstream animal protection organization. The idea that we're trying to eliminate pet-keeping or people's ability to eat meat is ridiculous. The previous comments cite no credible sources for their claims. If you want to learn about our work, check out www.humanesociety.org. We have also received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator.

Hillary, if you were correct in what you say, they would be spending less on lawyers and more at the shelters. They sail in with media support and take the money and run, leaving shelters to take care of animals. Laws are on the books that already work or there would be no seizures for cruelty! There are many items to support what has been said, the average person has had their heartstrings pulled and they are duped to "help the little animals", they didn't realize it was to give money to lawyers and politicians to "help the little animals" *OUT OF EXISTENCE* because, you see, that is what happens when all are neutered and spayed......there are none left then.

...and I want my mail order sham doctor's degree so I can practice brain surgery too . HSUS is a media savvy AR group , led by a PETA trained man in a 1200 dollar suit .Scam the money from tragedies , use it for political purposes and an AR agenda then flee the scene . Cult is a great word to desribe what they do for the most part ...

Great! The fox is now teaching the other foxes how to raid the henhouse! Is this like attending the Reverend Good Time school of Theology? I think so. Shame on D.C. for giving these cretins accreditation.

  • Hillary 2 years ago

@Joe - unfortunately institutionalized animal cruelty such as factory farming often requires legal challenges to make any dent in the problem. But if you think our organization is only about litigation, then you don't know the HSUS very well. Ever heard of our Pets for Life program? How about our Animal Care Expo for the animal sheltering community? Or our veterinary field work to provide free medical care for pets on Native American reservations?

    May 2009 -- H$U$ Expose Buried

"An ABC-TV affiliate in Atlanta aired an Investigative Report on where the Humane Society of the United States spends its money. Twenty four hours later, the story was pulled from the air. I wasn’t able to locate it in their archives either, even though there were older investigative stories still there. I spoke with Mark Winne of Channel 2 and was told that it is routine to take down this type of news report, however he was less specific when asked why it wasn’t saved in their archives. A copy of the video played on YouTube for one day then mysteriously disappeared from that site as well. ..."

Just another way our liberal government is pushing their agenda down our throats through a back door. I'm not really surprised...the public schools and universities are bad enough already...it is only a matter of time before they start filling our kids' heads (brainwashing) them with this animal rights garbage, too.

Very few knew this accreditation was going on before it happened. Chalk that one up to the mainstream liberal media.

I love my country but I am DISGUSTED with it's direction and I am deathly afraid of what is next when I see stuff like HSUS U accreditation (and other frivolous garbage) being pushed in Washington.

Just goes to show you what really matters -- if you have the right amount of cash, you can get what you want. I guess I could open my own accredited University if I greased enough (and the right) palms in Washington!

How many lobbyists DOES HSUS & PETA employ?

  • katie 2 years ago

Great article. Thanks for writing something worth reading! It's about time this country has a degree geared toward the animal rights field! To Michelle from San Antonio, TX: shame on you for not wanting animals to have rights. Animal rights are not garbage! Animals have feelings, emotions, and are an important part of many people's lives. They deserve to be treated with respect. Generally, people who care deeply about animals are very compassionate people who also treat people with respect.
