This morning Sally Costello, Executive Director of the Escondido Humane Society made an important announcement about the possible merger of the Escondido Humane Society and the San Diego Humane Society.
If the merger goes through the two organizations would become a single not-for-profit organization working to save animal lives and to better care for the people and animals in the community.
The new organization would operate under the name "San Diego Humane Society and SPCA" with the Escondido Campus representing the physical location. Dr. Gary Weitzman will serve as President and Ms. Costello will transition from Executive Director of Escondido Humane Society to becoming part of the leadership team of the new organization.
The leaders of the two organizations say that they have been collaborating for several years on animal welfare initiatives and have always shared the same goal of saving as many homeless animals as possible. This evolved into the realization that they could be stronger and more effective by joining forces.
Says Ms. Costello, “This potential merger is about two strong organizations coming together for greater impact in saving animal lives. Both organizations have similar goals and missions, so it makes sense to combine resources.”
A merger exploration committee comprised of representatives from both organizations has been formed to evaluate how the new organization can work together more effectively to save the most vulnerable animals in San Diego County. The exploration committee plans to complete due diligence, seek stakeholder input and make recommendations by April of this year.
