On Saturday, July 23rd, Austin Humane Society’s new program Humane Heroes hosted Teddy Bear Surgery. The free event included Teddy Bear Surgeries where children of all ages within the Austin area could bring a stuffed animal, diagnose it with an illness, and cure it with the help of one of their vets. Fun educational sessions on how to greet dogs safely, make toys for sheltered dogs and other activities were offered in the waiting room.
The Humane Heroes Program is designed to have children under fourteen that are too young to volunteer with Austin Humane Society involved with the sheltered animals. Individual children and their families can support the animals by hosting fundraising events or collecting donated items from the Austin Humane Society’s wish list just to name a couple of ideas. These Humane Heroes can tour the shelter to experience how their donations are being utilized.
Groups, such as Mom clubs, youth organizations, school classes, teams, and troops can also participate in Humane Heroes. The Austin Humane Society offers Humane Hero educational talks to groups, where a member of their staff will visit your location to talk to children about shelter animals as well as how to properly meet and greet dogs and handle cats. It has been noted that children always have fun, and so do the pets that come along for the session. If you know of a group interested in touring the shelter, please contact Misty Valenta. A large lion was the last stuffed animal to be seen during the Humane Heroes’ Teddy Bear Surgery event. Three adults and one child had to care the large lion onto the operating table where Dr. Luke discussed the situation with the child. Congratulations to all the Austin area children who became Humane Heroes during Saturday’s event.
