Humane Society receives celebrity support to end cosmetic animal testing

On the heels of the European Union ban on the import and sale of animal tested cosmetic products and ingredients, the Humane Society of the United States and Humane International (HSUS/HSI) launched a campaign and announced today, March 13, that the HSUS/HSI has received overwhelming celebrity support for their campaign to end cosmetics testing on animals.

The HSUS campaign, “Be Cruelty-Free Week,” is a global effort urging consumers to get involved in creating a humane economy with the power of the pocketbooks and their voices. The Campaign was born from a nationwide poll that found that 67 percent of American voters are opposed to testing cosmetics on animals.

The use of animal testing for cosmetics is the ugly side of the beauty industry. Top celebrities, who the cosmetics industry has often enlisted to help sell their products, are quickly recognizing that animal testing is cruel and unnecessary. Celebrity support for the “Be Cruelty-Free Week” includes Ke$ha, Colbie Caillat, Michael Vartan, Daniella Alonso, Francia Raisa, Torrey DeVitto, Fiona Gubelmann and Joanna Krupa. These celebrities join the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Ricky Gervais and Chrissie Hynde in backing the HSUS/HSI’s efforts to end cosmetics cruelty by endorsing the Campaign.

In her support, Colbie Caillat noted that, “Everyone wants to look their best. And it’s great to know we can look and feel beautiful without causing pain to animals. The HSUS/HSI's Be Cruelty-Free campaign is urging companies to stop testing their products on animals. There are so many great products, from skin care products, to shampoo, to makeup, that are cruelty free … there’s just no reason to buy anything else.”

The HSUS and Humane Society Legislative Fund are building partnerships with scientists, government officials, and industry leaders to make the United States the next biggest cruelty-free market. Consumers who want to help can sign the “Be Cruelty-Free” pledge at humanesociety.org/becrueltyfree in support of an end to cosmetic animal testing and can choose from companies that are certified by the Leaping Bunny.
