The most beloved leader in Venezuela’s history has recently left the world of the living. Hugo Chavez has left behind a country overwhelmed by sorrow. Growing up in poverty helped the great leader learn to fight for what he wanted and what he believed in. His entire life was a struggle and it was his courage and his rhetorical qualities that earned him the love of his people.
The 58-year-old leader was diagnosed with a tumor 2 years ago. Whereas his health problems were not a secret, his death still managed to shake the nation. Chavez’s legacy will be cherished and his dream of a United South America will live on and may one day become reality in the hands of another brave leader.
Covered under a heavy blanket of sorrow Venezuela is mourning its leader. Furthermore the people seem unable to let go of their leader and have chosen to bring him a high tribute. The departed leader will be embalmed. This way he will always be close to those who still need his presence to give them power to find their way.
One can only assume how this great leader would have led his country to further successes if he had more time to do so. Now it is up to other political figures to try and fill his shoes. Nicolas Maduro, the vice president of Venezuela is the most likely candidate as Hugo Chavez himself named him his successor.
Presidential elections will be held in 30 days but the Latin people have small hopes of ever having a leader as driven and beloved as Chavez. Furthermore Chavez empowered Venezuela by exploiting the numerous natural resources. Whether the country will be able to stay on ascension route or it will submit to corruption is hard to predict.
While he was adored by the Latin community his methods were heavily critiqued by the outside world. To some he appeared to be a despot while to his own people he was a savior. It is hard for foreigners to understand the culture and the needs of other nations. Often great leaders are intimidating to those who are weak of heart. Hugo Chavez was a great leader and that is how he will be remembered by his people.
