Hugo Chavez's cause of death has been revealed. On March 8, CBS News reported that the President of Venezuela suffered a massive heart attack. The heart attack came 14 years after a battle with cancer, though Chavez never revealed what kind of cancer he had or if it had spread in his body.
"He couldn't speak but he said it with his lips ... 'I don't want to die. Please don't let me die,' because he loved his country, he sacrificed himself for his country," said Gen. Jose Ornella, the head of Venezuela's presidential guard. Rumors of Chavez's death have circulated many times over the past few years because of his questionable health.
Hugo Chavez's cause of death could have been caused by his other ailments. According to the report, Chavez came down with a severe respiratory infection the night before he had a heart attack. In the past, Chavez suffered from respiratory infections and even had a tracheal tube inserted to help his breathing. These repeat infections make some believe that his cancer had spread to his lungs -- but this was never confirmed.
Chavez was very sick and things seemed to get worse for him in recent years. He had tumors removed, he underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and various surgeries were performed to improve his quality of life but his body couldn't take anymore.
Hugo Chavez was 58-year-old.
