One aspect of Hugh Laurie’s career that many are not aware of is his voice work with audio books. Before House, while still in the U.K., Laurie did narration on many audio recordings of both classic and well known favorites. They run the gamut from the cherished works of Dickens to time honored children’s books. These audio recordings date from about 1998 -2004. The following is a partial list of some of these works:
- Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens
- Three Men in a Boat, by Jerome K. Jerome
- Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, by Jerome K. Jerome
- Gulliver’s Travels, by Jonathan Swift
- Portuguese Irregular Verbs, by Alexander McCall Smith
- At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances, by Alexander McCall Smith
- Finn Family Moomintroll, by Tove Jansson
- Cyril Bonhamy and the Great Drain Robbery, by Jonathan Gathorne-Hardy
- The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, by Roald Dahl
Laurie also did narration on the audio recording of the book Inconceivable, by Ben Elton. This book was made into the film, Maybe Baby which Laurie co-starred in. There is an audio version of Laurie’s 1998 spy novel, The Gun Seller that he recorded. It is out of print, however and very hard to find. Most of the other titles listed above are readily available and can be found on Amazon.com among others. They are very much worth checking into and offer a different look at another aspect of Laurie’s career. Those only familiar with his work on House may be surprised to hear Laurie speaking in his native British accent. To hear a sample of one of Hugh Laurie’s audio books, please listen below.
