He sings, he’s a multi-instrumental bravado, and also an Emmy award winning actor who is touring the world fresh off the release of his newest album, Didn’t It Rain. British superstar, Hugh Laurie, notably known (in the States anyways) for his role as the pill-popping, sarcastic Dr. Gregory House in House (2004-2012) is bringing his “Copper Bottom Band” on a US West Coast tour that will land in San Diego tonight.
Laurie, who has collected 6 Emmy nominations and 2 Golden Globe wins in his role as Dr. House, gained recognition with Stephen Fry on various projects, most notably Blackadder. Running for the good part of the 80s, Blackadder has been polled as one of the biggest British sitcoms of all time. But it wasn’t until 2004 when Laurie expanded his fame to the US, as he took on the title role in House.
From the UK, to Australia, and finally here in the US, Laurie and the 7 piece band (Daniel Piltch, Vincent Henry, Elizabeth Lea, Jean McClain, Gaby Moreno, Herman Matthews, and Mark Goldberg) have been busy performing since the 2013 release of Didn’t It Rain, a follow up to their first album, Let Them Talk. (2011) His shows are a collection of music from the two albums, varying through different styles in which take blues as its foundation. One may also expect to hear the band pay homage to some late great artists through a few covers.
A multi-instrumentalist, Laurie has proven his love and talent for music throughout his on screen career. Anyone that has ever watched Laurie perform, from the small screen to the silver screen, knows that he is a true performer, so it’s a fair bet that his live shows will be a true testament to his talent. Catch him and the band tonight at the Balboa Theatre.
