Would the guy who has played Marvel Comics mutant Wolverine a whopping six times be able to pull off playing a boy who would never grow up? Fortunately, no one has to worry about that. Hugh Jackman has been cast in Joe Wright’s forthcoming Peter Pan film, but the Oscar-nominated Aussie will be playing the villain Blackbeard. Warner Bros. Pictures made the announcement today.
“Hugh Jackman always delivers indelible performances that resonate with audiences”, stated Greg Silverman, the President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production for Warner Bros. “We know he will create a Blackbeard who will be a powerful presence in this original Peter Pan adventure.” Silverman made the announcement with Sue Kroll, the President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution for the studio.
Director Wright’s last film was 2012’s “Anna Karenina”, which starred Keira Knightley(the actress has collaborated with Wright on three of his five features) and earned an Academy Award(Best Achievement in Costume Design). Born in London, the director made a name for himself in the U.S. in 2005 with another adaptation of classic literature: “Pride and Prejudice.”
Hugh Jackman will next be seen in “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, director Bryan Singer’s return to the Marvel Comics franchise. He is also starring in “Elysium” director Neill Blomkamp’s next project, “Chappie”, which began filming a few months ago.
Warner Bros.’ Peter Pan film does not yet have an official title, but it has a release date: J.M. Barrie’s classic character will fly onto theater screens on July 17, 2015.
