Hugh Jackman has no problem transforming his physique to play the ripped action hero Wolverine, but admits he is not naturally a buff, strapping guy. If he weren't getting paid to work out, Jackman says he would revert to his "normal" state as a thin, lean guy.
"I still see myself as this skinny long-legged person," Jackman, 44, told People Oct. 3. "That body I have is for 'The Wolverine.' I did work on it, but it's not my natural body."
The 6-foot-2 Hugh ate 6,000 calories a day and did intense weight-lifting to achieve Wolverine's muscular physique, but says his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, wouldn't mind if he let himself go a bit.
"Deb tells me, 'Your job as my husband is to be fat and chubby, so that no matter what's going on with me, I look great,' " he laughed.
Jackman recently hit back at Internet trolls who criticize his wife's weight, saying he pities them. "It almost makes me sad for the people [who attack my wife]," he said. "They're obviously in a bad place."
Hugh said it's easy for him to ignore mean-spirited comments, but his 57-year-old wife gets very upset by the weight and age insults directed at her. She get especially furious when people suggest that Jackman is gay (because a hot guy like him couldn't possibly be in love with an older woman who's not super-skinny) and their 17-year marriage is a business arrangement to maintain his image as a family man.
"When [Deborra] hears the gossip, she finds it hard to shut up about it," said Jackman, who insists the secret to their happy marriage is friendship, compromise and unconditional love.
"I'd say 80 percent of marriage is choosing the right person, and with Deb, I just knew," he said. "We were really close friends before we got together. But in any marriage there must be some sacrifices. No marriage survives if both people are selfish. Obviously, there has to be a great attraction and love. I ring Deb about 10 times a day."
