On August 30, the stunned owners of "Duke," a large, four-year-old Siberian husky, called 9-1-1 to report that their dog had been strangled by the huge reptile.
When the 9-1-1 dispatcher asked if the snake had been corralled, Duke's guardian replied:
It’s curled around our dog’s neck.”
According to Tampa Bay News, Duke's guardian, Michelle Rojas and her 22-year-old son, had attempted to pull the huge snake off of their dog's neck, but they were not successful.
The snake was later killed by off-duty fire captain and reality TV star, Charles "Big Country" Seifert, who appears in Animal Planet's Swamp Wars; the snake was sent to the University of Florida for a necropsy.
Though rock pythons are not venomous, they are considered to be "ill-tempered." The snakes kill their prey by constricting them.
Two, young boys in New Brunswick were killed by a huge rock python earlier this summer; both boys died from asphyxiation.
Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have canvassed the area to let residents know that the snakes are in the area.
