Huge recall of pet treats, dog treats: Salmonella danger for pets and humans

The huge recall of pet treats includes Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Nature’s Deli, Colorado Naturals, Petco, and Best Bully Stick. The FDA announced in a Feb. 19, 2013, press release that the pet treats have been recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The FDA reports that “Kasel Associated Industries of Denver, CO is voluntarily recalling ALL PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED AT ITS DENVER, COLORADO FACILITY FROM APRIL 20, 2012 THRU SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 due to possible Salmonella contamination.”

“Salmonella can sicken animals that eat these products and humans are at risk for salmonella poisoning from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the pet products or any surfaces exposed to these products.”

The recalled pet treats were distributed nationwide through various retailers and have “Lot numbers as shown in 1 Year Best By Date Table and 2 Year Best By Date Table.” The list of recalled lot numbers can be found at the bottom of this article.

Salmonella infection symptoms in pets include:

Being lethargic
Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
Fever
Vomiting
Some pets might show a decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain

Salmonella infections in pets can be spread to other animals and humans.

Salmonella infection symptoms in humans include:

Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
Abdominal cramping
Fever

Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonellosis is an infection with bacteria called Salmonella. Most individuals infected with Salmonella show symptoms like diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps within 12 to 72 hours after infection.

While most people with Salmonellosis get better within four to seven days, the diarrhea can lead to complications and may require hospitalization. Salmonella can travel from the intestines into the blood stream and affect other organs which requires treatment with antibiotics. Individuals with a compromised immune system such as the very young or elderly are especially vulnerable to salmonella complications.
