More than 400 cars were temporarily seized stretching longer than four city blocks in one of the largest illegal street racing busts that has been caught on tape! Illegal street racing is a quickly growing culture through out USA. At the same rate of its growth, the government is cracking down on this ever expanding cult for more reasons than speeding and reckless driving. The fascination to street race is fueled by social acceptance and the thrill of driving fast. The adrenaline rush has most "hooked" and regardless of consequence they simply will not stop street racing.
"To this day people still street race on that exact same street. Usually the first wave of people will meet up there, race for about twenty minutes to a half hour and get broken up by the cops. Mostly everyone gets off without a ticket. Then another wave will come and the cycle repeats all night long. There are also other spots that have this exact same cycle. However most of the racing is on the freeways now."- Anonymous
After watching the video, it appears a street racing sting had occurred. Friday night at a well known street racing location, the police had setup in a vacant warehouse to capture video evidence for prosecution. The sting code named operation "dragnet" which is a combination of city, county, and special "gang strike" force silently observed. Waiting for about an hour after the racing started, the team prepared it's invasion. Blocking off all exits to catch those that flee, the dragnet force temporarily seized nearly 400 illegal street racers. They had everything planned for the seizure, but were clueless when it came to the actual procurement.
They didn't know what to do with the street racers once confined! Minnesota Gang Strike Force Commander Ron Ryan said, "I think it's like the dog chasing the truck... we caught the truck now what are we going to do with it ... ?" A few tickets, a couple warrants, and a handful of arrests later the majority was let free and the sting was complete. According to their records, only nine suspects escaped initial custody. It is still a relevant question of what exactly to do with those caught illegally street racing.

"What to do with illegal street racers?" Several ideas have been brought forth a wide variety of consequences. Jail time, probation, rehabilitation, and even extreme repercussions like vehicle crushing above have been purposed. In California, a vehicle is crushed with the owner present as part of the penalty for illegal street racing. This radical type of punishment works but also has it's negative aspects. Now that street racers know their cars will be crushed, they're even more tempt to flee. Does crushing a car make the road safer?

How to fix illegal street racing!
A cure for the solution is simple, we need more drag strips open at cheaper rates. There isn't enough places for these people to race, so they do it on the street. If there were more drag strips with more frequent open track days it would dramatically reduce street racing. Tampa Bay leads the way with 70 performance shops and racing events every weekend. Autocross, drag strips, dirt rings, and more all are available to the avid racer.
Not every city can afford to build a complete drag strip or race track. Converting parking lots and airports into temporary race tracks and drag strips is a cheap way to fix the problem. "Sanctioned" events with proper safety personnel and location is the solution to reducing illegal street racing in your town. Try it and see!

They need to crush Drunk Driver vehicles.
I go along with the Track racing. Lakeland has an 8th mi track and Bradenton is 1/4 mi.
Car clubs like Souhern Camaro/Firebird at www.scfba.info practice track racing and track safety. We do not condone street racing in any form. I think if clubs promote this than it will at least keep the number of Street races and street racers at the track and off the streets.
Works for us!
I agree with roadrocket. Ample track time has reduced the street racing in Tampa Bay, that's for sure. The prices are decent (could be cheaper) but for the most part Tampa has the ideal setup for street racing performance. Over 70 performance shops and several tracks open within at least 5 days of anytime you feel "the need for speed".
I don't agree with Bill though. Making a mandatory crush is only going to make people want to run from police even more. The last thing I want to see is a drunk driving 140+ mph in his vette evading police lol
I would so like to participate in one of thse police auctions. i'd have my pick of 400 nice cars.
forget all you cops ill see you on the streets
I agree that more drag strips need to be built. We used to have plenty of options in San Diego but now we pretty much have race legal at Qualcomm which is only an 1/8 and it's not open enough. Back in the day we had Carlsbad raceway which is where everyone would hang out that raced.
1. This Young People want to raced there Cars on a 1/4 Mile Track only on a legal race way Track were is legal too! I agreed! The Street Racers racing on the Streets Ilegalley & breaking the Cities,Towships,Towns in 50 States too! Those Young People Like to Break Traffic Laws By Speeding high Speeds too! True!! There Drivers Licences Shoud Be Suspended for 3 Years too! It Depended on the Court charged by the Summoms is issued by the Police Officer of Town, Township, Cities, P.D. too!!
